Whats # 1 doing?

Friday November 27, 7:00 PM
Kansas vs. Tennessee Tech

@Kansas

Last game for Kansas: 89-59 victory over Oakland (NL)

Last Game for Tennessee Tech: 72-65 victory at Southern Utah (NL)

Matchup history: None

Line: Kansas -35

No real threat to a change at the very top of the rankings this weekend. Kansas will be taking on the Tennessee Tech on Friday night. Thus far things have gone as expected for the Jayhawks. Xavier Henry is scoring, leading the team at over 17 a game, Cole Aldrich is rebounding and Sherron Collins is running the show. The game against Memphis was closer than expected but everyone is writing if off as a positive learning experience for a team that will likely have only a few hard fought games until late in the year.

What can you say about Tennessee Tech. They may not be great but they are certainly in demand with 6 games already under their belt. They have a 3-3 record but only one of those was a lined game a 37 point loss to Minnesota. Kansas is a tough out for everyone but will especially tough for the Golden Eagles who do not have a player over 6’8″ on their roster.

This will be cakewalk for the Jayhawks and should be over by halftime. Cole Aldrich may be the best center in the country and TT does not have any size or length to slow him down. The fact is that most of the players on Kansas’ bench would start for the Golden Eagles…that may seem harsh but it is the truth.

Score Prediction: Kansas 81 Tennessee tech 45

Pick: I always get antsy when the line get too big, a couple of last minute threes have stung me before. I would stay away from this one.

Mid-Major Rager

Friday November 27, 11:30PM
UCLA vs. Butler

76 Classic Consolation Bracket (at Anaheim)

Last Game for UCLA: Loss to Portland 74-47

Last Game for Butler: Loss to Minnesota 83-72

Line: Butler -7

Matchup history: No recent meetings

This is an interesting early matchup. Butler entered the season with lofty expectations, ranked in the top 15 in most polls, while UCLA is as down as they have been since Ben Howland took the reigns, depleted by NBA defections and recruits who have yet to perform up to snuff. Both of these teams need this game as it is a victory over a name opponent even though most would give Butler the better chance of tasting post-season glory.

Yes you read the line right. UCLA is +7 against Butler. That is how far this program has fallen and quickly. Nobody is mentioning them as a contender in the PAC 10 and missing the post season is a real possibility. This year they have already lost to Fullerton and Portland – not a typo. There is some talent on this team, enough to compete with Butler but it has shown little since it arrived on campus. A loss on this one would drop them to 2-3 on the young season.

Butler is lead by Matt Howard and Gordon Hayward, two very good forwards. They were caught off guard against Minnesota last night and need to grab this victory to maintain their status as the mid-major to beat. As shocking as it may be they are the better team, at least in the starting lineup. As the line indicates oddsmakers are not expecting this to be a tight ball game.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Score Prediction: Butler – 64 UCLA – 55

Pick: I feel comfortable grabbing the Bulldogs here. They play smart, have better players and both teams played yesterday so fatigue should be a wash.

Detroit at Depaul

@Depaul (Rosemont Horizon)

Last game for Detroit: 66-54 victory at Albany

Last game for Depaul: 58-51 victory against St. Joes

Line: TBD

Matchup History: Depaul has won last 2 (71-62 in ’08 and 70-64 on the road in ’07)

Neither of these teams are expected to win their conferences so if they want to be invited to the Big Dance, or any other dance, they need some victories out of conference. For Detroit it is simple. A win against a Big East squad, any one, will improve their RPI giving them a modest chance for an invite. To date their only loss is to a ranked Cal team but the Bears have slipped since them. Depaul is is going to find it extremely tough to grab any victories once conference play begins so they have to grab as many W’s as possible before it starts.

For a small conference team the Titans have some bigs, three players at 6’10 or taller including leading scorer and rebounder Eli Holman. They are coming off of three straight ML and ATS wins. They shouldn’t be pushed around by Depaul as they start only one player under 6’6″. If they can stay in the game early they have a chance at the upset.

Depaul features a beast in Mac Koshwal, an NBA prospect with a beefy body. He is averaging a double-double so far and the Titans will need to blitz the boards to keep him off the offensive glass. Look for him to draw a ton of attention making it possible for other Blue Demons to get off against the Titans. Will Walker continues to improve, he is the leading scorer averaging a point more than last year in the early going.

Score Prediction: Depaul – 71 Detroit – 67

Pick: I like to Detroit to battle all the way through this one on the road but in the end they will come up short. Should be a nice cover though.
