Orange vs Cardinals CBB Basketball Spread/Handicapping

In a scheduling quirk the Orange did not play at all during the week this week.  Not sure if that is a good or bad thing when you have a monster of a game on the road to play.

Syracuse

They have been workmanlike since Big East play started, winning all four of their games relatively easily while posting a 2-2 ATS record.  This is the first time all season long that Syracuse will be the underdog.

This is another very good Syracuse team but the depth takes a hit with the loss of forward James Southerland – third leading scorer.  This season has seen the emergence of guard Michael Carter-Williams.

Last year he barely played as a frosh and this year he is leading the nation in assists.  They are going to need him to be very steady against a Louisville team that is known for its defensive pressure.

I get excited when I see a team as good as Syracuse as an underdog.  Knocking off the #1 team in the nation on the road is no easy feat but this would be an upset not a shocker.  For me the value is just too good to ignore.  Look below and you can see my score prediction.  Crazy? Maybe.

Louisville

Louisville used last week’s demise of the unbeatens to jump into first place in the polls.  Hard to argue with it, their lone loss was a close one against Duke early in the season on a neutral court.  The Cardinals have been killing foes since Big East play began winning every one of their 4 games by at least 15 points.  This is the first of two games between the top two teams in the conference and Louisville is looking to take the pole position. The Cardinals have been sensational on defense this season.  Center Georgui DIeng is back after injury and the Cards have not given up more than 62 points in any league game.  Against South Florida they gave up just 38 points which to be honest sounds close to impossible in the shot clock era.  Offensively they are sometimes challenged and will look to scoring leader Russ Smith to make some buckets against that tricky Syracuse zone.

While I think the outcome is going to go the opposite way I do think there is good value on Louisville.  They have been crushing foes of late and are at home.  Winning by 6 the way they defend and shoot free throws is not a stretch.  Only three of their 16 wins have been that close so they have done it before.
