Matchup Stats | ATS Insider Preview

UCLA thumped Tulsa to advance beyond their opening matchup, while Stephen F. Austin pulled off an improbable upset of Virginia Commonwealth despite trailing late in the game.

The Lumberjacks found themselves trailing by 10 points with 4:15 to play, then trailing by four points inside the game’s final four seconds, but a late foul by JeQuan Lewis on Desmond Haymon allowed Haymon to complete a four-point play and force overtime, where Stephen F. Austin completed their comeback.

Forward Jacob Parker paced all scorers in the game with 22 points, while guard Thomas Walkup had the game’s only double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The team had plenty of trouble with the ‘Havoc’ defense, as the Rams stole the ball 11 times and forced 17 turnovers, but the Lumberjacks outplayed them badly late en route to the 77-75 overtime win.

As for the Bruins, they had little trouble getting past Tulsa, coming away with a 76-59 win. Guard Jordan Adams led all scorers in that one with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Standout guard Kyle Anderson had a rough go of it, hitting on just 3-of-11 shots for eight points, but filled out the rest of his stat line nicely with six assists, six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks.

The Bruins shot 46 percent from the field in the game, while holding the Golden Hurricane to 36.8 percent shooting.

The team will need to work on its rebounding though, allowing Tulsa to pull down 12 offensive boards. The team’s starting big-men combined for just four rebounds in the game.

It is time to stop underestimating the Lumberjacks, who have now won 29 games in a row.

A second consecutive win may be asking a little much, but the Bruins have no business giving this many points away to any tournament team. Stephen F. Austin also proved in their game against Virginia Commonwealth that they are willing to play to the final whistle which makes the possibility of a backdoor cover very real.

Additionally, the total seems high considering how strong the UCLA defense, beginning with the start of the Pac-12 tournament, the Bruins have surrendered an average of just 63.0 points per game over their last four contests.

The Lumberjacks are 5-1 ATS in their last six non-conference games, while the Bruins are 2-5 ATS in their last seven NCAA Tournament games.

The under is 5-0 in the Bruins’ last five non-conference games, and 4-1 in their last five games overall.

The play: Stephen F. Austin +9, Under 144
