The nation’s best player and the electrifying BYU Cougars will tip off against the No. 2 seed Florida Gators who appear poised to make their charge to Houston in the Southeast Regional Semifinals in New Orleans on Thursday.

The Cougars are making their best tournament dash in 30 years, but many doubted whether BYU could make a deep run after the season-ending suspension of Brandon Davies — but they didn’t count on the extraordinary play of Jimmer Fredette.

After surviving Wofford and advancing past the round of 64 for the second straight year, the Cougars dismantled Gonzaga 89-67 behind Fredette’s 34 points.

BYU’s senior guard led the nation in scoring, averaging 28.5 points per game, posting 13 games with 30-plus points during the regular season, including a career-high 52 in the Mountain West semifinals against New Mexico. He is the big gun the Gators will need to contain if they wish continue their campaign.

As for Florida, they have been equally impressive in their two tournament wins, shooting 52.4 percent from the floor while holding the opposition to 39.0 percent shooting.

SEC Player of the Year Chandler Parsons leads them.

The towering forward is one of the most multitalented threats in college basketball and is the type of player that hurts you without putting huge numbers on the scoreboard. He had 10 points and 10 assists with seven boards as the Gators thumped Cal Santa Barbara 79-51 in the round of 64, and then registered seven points, five dimes and five rebounds in the team’s 73-65 victory over UCLA in the round of 32.

The Gators are defiantly a slim favorite here. Florida’s success could be there size match up over a smaller BYU lineup.

They are also deep. Four players are averaging double figures per game in points, led by Irving Walker (14.4 PPG) and Kenny Boynton (14.1 PPG). Walker did most of the damage against the Bruins, pouring in a game high 21 points while Boynton chipped in 12.

Billy Donovan knows how to guide the Gators to Mecca, having done so in back-to-back seasons in 2006 and 2007, but that doesn’t mean that Donovan and the Gators will look past the Cougars, because they won’t. They know that BYU can score points, having four players in double figures in each of their first two NCAA tournament games.

Matt’s Free Prediction: This game will come down to a few clutch plays in the second half, as it figures to be a tight affair. I’ll lean towards Florida in this one.
