Florida

I have to admit that I thought the Tigers might push the Gators a little but the top team in the country looked really good and might have eliminated Mizzou from the tournament next week too in the process. Florida is playing great and it looks like they will go unnopposed for the rest of this tournament.

The top overall seed looks like an inevitability.

The Gators have an experienced and deep roster. Against Missouri it was the backcourt of Scottie Wilbekin and Michael Frazier that did the damage. Each made 5 three pointers as they shot a combined 10 for 13 from deep for the game.

That more than covered for the fact that Casey Prather and Will Yeguete each made only one field goal. There really doesn’t look like an obvious way to beat this team.

It is hard not to like the Gators as a small favourite.

They do not have nearly as much to play for as Tennessee but like the Vols they were not pushed very hard in their quarterfinal game against Missouri. One great thing about Florida is that they don’t seem to ever take a night off. There is a reason they have not lost in more than 2 months.

Tennessee

Tennessee needed to win their first game in the tournament and they did to extend their current winning streak to 6 games.

With 21 wins now under their belt they might be heading to the Big Dance but a strong performance against the top team in the country would help a lot. A win would remove all doubt but even a good battle might help their cause enough.

They have played the Gators twice this season but neither were close finishes.

There is going to be a lot of banging down low in this one. I am a big fan of Vols bigs Jarnell Stokes and Jeronne Maymon. Stokes is the rare double-double player but Maymon is the heart and soul of this team.

These two have to play well but they will be challenged by the size of the Gators. There will also be a battle between wing scorers Jordan MacRae and Prather. The difference is the Gators can win even if Prather is off.

During the season there are rare back to back games and the Vols got a good draw against South Carolina. It was an easy win so they should have plenty in the tank to challenge the top ranked Gators.

The problem is they have not played well against Florida and have not been strong against the spread away from Knoxville.

Spread Pick: Florida -5
O/U Pick: N/A
Score Prediction: Florida 72 – Tennessee 60
