Friday’s second round action in this year’s NCAA Men’s Tournament features a matchup between the Akron Zips and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Southwest Region. Tip-off from the United Center is set for 1:40 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on TBS.

Akron finished in third-place in the Mid American standings, but a thrilling 66-65 OT win over Kent State as a 1 ½-point underdog in the conference championship punched its ticket to the big dance. The Zips bring an overall record of 23-12 straight-up into this tournament and were 18-13-1 against the spread.

This team has some decent scoring depth with eight players averaging at least five points a game led by Nikola Cvetinovic’s 11.9 points. He also leads the team in rebounds with seven a game and is shooting 45.3 percent from the floor. The Zips are averaging 71 points and 34 rebounds a game while hitting 43.3 percent of their attempts from the field.

Notre Dame finished the regular season as the No.2 seed in the Big East with a conference record of 14-4 SU. Its dreams of a No.1 seed for this tournament evaporated with an 83-77 OT loss to Louisville as a two-point favorite in the Big East Tournament semifinals. The team ended the season with an overall record of 26-6 SU (16-11 ATS).

Experience is the Irish’s strong suit with five senior starters led by Ben Hansbrough, Tim Abromaitis, and Carleton Scott. Hansbrough leads the team with 18.5 points and 4.3 assists. Abromaitis is the second leading scorer with 15.3 points a game and Scott is the leading rebounder with 7.1 a game. Notre Dame is shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 39.2 percent from three-point range. It is averaging 76 points and 37 rebounds a game.

The Fighting Irish are keenly aware of last year’s early exit from this tournament at the hands of Old Dominion. The veteran leadership on this team is planning on a much longer run this time around and takes over in lopsided rout of the undermanned Zips.

Trends:
Under is 7-1 in NOTRE last 8 Fri. games.
Under is 18-6 in NOTRE last 24 neutral site games.

The Pick: Notre Dame -13
