It’s been a common theme in the world of college basketball this season: A lot of teams in or near the top 25 have flourished at home but have been poor on the road. Missouri can’t win away from Mizzou Arena. Washington can’t win away from Seattle. Wisconsin is a decidedly different team when it’s not playing inside its beloved Kohl Center in Madison. On and on it goes. The NEW BetOnline

Kentucky is another top-25 team that just isn’t the same when it leaves its Lexington lair, Rupp Arena, affectionately known as “The Big Barn in the Bluegrass.” How will Kentucky fare this weekend as it steps inside Memorial Gym, one of the more charming buildings in all of college basketball?

Kentucky has lost at Georgia, at Alabama, at Ole Miss and at Florida in SEC play. In fact, all six of the team’s losses have come away from home.

Vanderbilt wins so often at Memorial because it’s the only gym in the nation that has the benches along the opposite baselines. It’s harder for a visiting coach to communicate to his players at the opposite end of the floor. Vanderbilt takes advantage of this and uses the environment to rack up home win after home win, including a Thursday night triumph over the SEC West’s best team, the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Will Vandy be able to keep the momentum going against Kentucky? The home-road splits of these teams suggest the Commodores will win. After all, Kentucky lost at Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama and Florida. However, Vanderbilt has displayed a discouraging tendency to lose right after it wins. The Commodores have not stacked together back-to-back performances of considerable quality in 2011. This is why Vanderbilt has not been able to shoot to the top of the SEC East in one of Kentucky’s down years. The stats tell you that Vanderbilt should be the pick, but Kentucky appears to be ready to win this particular road game.
