Much was expected of both of these teams going into the season, but North Carolina has struggled so far this year. The Tar Heels lost to both Minnesota and Vanderbilt on a neutral court, and they have struggled in their wins over other inferior opponents. Illinois was upset by Texas in overtime, but they did knock off a solid Maryland team the following day. 
Harrison Barnes will definitely be a star for North Carolina, but he has struggled with his shot early in the season. Barnes is shooting just 35% from the floor. Tyler Zeller is the leading scorer for the Tar Heels at 15.5 points per game. The biggest strength of this team is their depth. Ten players are averaging more than 10 minutes of playing time each game.
Illinois is led by senior point guard Demetri McCamey. McCamey is shooting better than 50% from the floor, and he is one of the better passers in college basketball. Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson are terrific sophomores in the backcourt, and both of them can knock down the three point shot. Freshman Jereme Richmond has shown flashes of brilliance in the Illini’s first few games.
This game is part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge this year. The ACC has historically dominated this event, though the Big Ten did win the challenge last year. I expect Illinois to win this one because of their superior guard play. The Tar Heels guards are good distributors of the basketball, but they don’t have the shooting touch that the Fighting Illini guards do.
