The Michigan State Spartans have been the most disappointing team in the nation this year. They were the #2 ranked team in the preseason and now they are squarely on the bubble. Everyone keeps waiting on Tom Izzo’s team to turn it around, and it just isn’t happening. The Iowa Hawkeyes are coming off a stunning victory over Purdue last Saturday.

Can they pull of another big upset on Thursday?

Michigan State is extremely talented, but they just haven’t put it together this year. How could a Tom Izzo coached team look this bad for an entire year? It is a very confusing situation. Kalin Lucas hasn’t been completely healthy most of the year, but he says he is ready to go now. Turnovers have been a major issue for this team.

The Spartans have committed countless unforced turnovers this year, which lead to easy baskets for the opposition. Durrell Summers was expected to have a breakout year, but he has shot just 38.9% from the floor and played poor defense. Michigan State does still get after it on the glass.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are an interesting story. This is a team that had extremely low expectations, but they have clearly progressed a lot throughout the year. Fran McCaffrey has this team playing a bit faster tempo than they did a year ago, and the young guys at Iowa are starting to play with some confidence. Their win over Purdue on Saturday was quite amazing, given that Purdue had been playing some terrific basketball of late.

This isn’t a team that has any one guy that stands out as their leader; rather they have several guys who collectively carry the load.  Ten guys see regular playing time for the Hawkeyes, so depth isn’t a problem. They do not shoot the ball well from distance, but they do get quite a few second chance opportunities.

Iowa has been inconsistent most of the year, as you would expect from such an inexperienced team.

Trends:

IOWA are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Thu. games.
Under is 11-5 in IOWA last 16 Thu. games.
MCHST are 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall.
MCHST are 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 vs. Big Ten.

The Pick:

I really hesitate to pick Michigan State after the way they have played this year, but I do think they will show up in this game with a strong effort. Iowa just doesn’t have enough talent to beat the Spartans if Michigan State shows up.  I also like the over in this one.

Prediction: Michigan State 76 Iowa 65
