The 2011 Big East Tournament quarterfinals get underway with the No.9 seed Connecticut Huskies advancing on to face the No.1 seed Pittsburgh Panthers this Thursday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Connecticut’s regular season slide of four losses in its last five games is becoming a distant memory after it followed up its 97-71 dismantling of DePaul in the first round as a 15-point favorite with an impressive 79-62 rout of No.8 seed Georgetown as a three-point favorite in Wednesday’s second round.

Kemba Walker scored a game-high 28 points in the win over the Hoyas after putting up 26 points against the Blue Demons in Tuesday’s game. The Huskies opened up their second straight double-digit lead at the half in this tournament after going on a 22-7 run midway in the first from which Georgetown never recovered. Jeremy Lamb was UConn’s second leading scorer with 11 points.

Pittsburgh has been idle through the first two rounds of this tournament after earning a double-bye as the No. 1 seed. The Panthers ended the regular season 27-4 straight-up overall (14-12 against the spread) and 15-3 SU in Big East play. They already beat Connecticut 78-63 earlier in the season as a 7 ½-point home favorite.

Look for Ashton Gibbs, who leads Pitt with 16.4 points a game, and Brad Wanamaker, who is the second leading scorer with 11.9 points and a team-high 5.2 assists a game, to come up big against the Huskies as both have been clutch players all season long. The Panthers are averaging 74 points and are ranked sixth in the nation in rebounds with 40 a game.

You have to be impressed with UConn’s dominant win over the Hoyas, but taking on the Panthers is a whole other story. The Huskies should put up a good battle but they just do not have the depth and talent to upend Pitt.

Trends:
UCONN are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 Thu. games.
Over is 21-7 in UCONN last 28 neutral site games.
Under is 12-5-1 in UCONN last 18 overall.
Under is 7-1 in PITT last 8 Thu. games.

The Pick- Pittsburgh 79-71
