The Georgetown Hoyas take on the St. John’s Red Storm in a matchup between two of the better teams in the Big East this season. Tonight’s game from Madison Square Garden is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and on ESPN Full Court pay per view.

Georgetown was stunned by No. 15 Notre Dame 69-55 as a 1 ½-point road favorite last Wednesday, tagging the Hoyas with an early loss in the conference. They followed that up with a harder than expected 86-75 win over DePaul as a 22-point home favorite to get back to .500 at 1-1 in Big East play. Overall, Georgetown is 12-2 straight-up and 9-4 against the spread.

A trio of guards account for close to 60 percent of the offense for the Hoyas. Senior Austin Freeman leads the way with 19.2 points per game, while another senior Chris Wright is averaging 13.1 points and leads the team in assists with 6.4 per game. Junior Jason Clark rounds things out with 13.1 points per game and 3.9 rebounds. Senior forward Julian Vaughn remains the primary force under the boards with 6.9 rebounds per game.

Georgetown is averaging 80 points a game and shooting 52.1 percent from the field, which is currently ranked second in the nation. It is hitting over 40 percent of its three-point attempts and converting on 72.5 percent of its free-throws.

St. John’s has gotten off to a solid start this season with nine wins in its last 11 games after losing to St. Mary’s 76-71 as a 3 ½-point road underdog in its season opener. The Red Storm is 9-3 SU overall (5-6 ATS) and 2-0 in the conference with an 81-71 win over West Virginia as a nine-point road underdog and a 67-65 win over Providence on the road in a game that was a ‘pick’.

They also boast a strong trio of players that are averaging in double-figures led by senior guard Dwight Hardy’s 16.3 points per game. Senior guard/forward D.J. Kennedy leads the team in rebounds with 6.3 per game and is averaging 12.3 points, while senior forward Justin Brownlee is averaging 14.3 points per game.

St. John’s is shooting 47.9 percent from the floor, but just 67.2 percent from the free-throw line and 32 percent from three-point range. As a team they are averaging 74 points a game.

Georgetown is 2-2 ATS in its last four road games and 6-4 ATS in its last 10 games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of its last six games.
St. John’s is 1-3 ATS in its last four games at home and 5-2 ATS in its last seven games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last eight games.

Head-to-head, the Hoyas have won seven of the last 10 games SU, but the Red Storm 2-2 SU and 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings. The total stayed ‘under’ in six of the last seven meetings.

Georgetown has to find ways to win games like this if it wants to seriously compete in the Big East this season. Bank on the Hoyas’ offense to outshoot the Red Storm to get the win on the road by a comfortable four to five point margin.

The Pick: Georgetown -2 ½

This was tough game to handicap and make a free sports pick in. The Georgetown Hoyas made a run in the second half, but the St. John’s Red Storm had a six point lead at the half and held on to win the game by three points. I look for Georgetown to get revenge the next time these two teams play again later this season.

Revenge sounds like a plan, but my observation is that it doesn’t happen most of the time in the second game played between two teams in the same year. Only if they play a third time does it usually make a difference, and so they might meet for a third time in the Big East Tournament and Georgetown might win then (but it would be at Madison Square Garden).
