The Southeastern Conference will trot out a bubble game for one of its members tonight. The Big Ten will pit two teams who have “NIT” written all over their resumes.
This game, if not a must-win for Georgia, is pretty darn close to one. The Bulldogs are right on the NCAA Tournament bubble and if they don’t improve their resume, it might burst for them.
They won at home against Kentucky and triumphed on the road against Tennessee, but their non-conference slate – while owning some decent wins against bubble teams UAB and Colorado – does not have high-value wins that really impress the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee.
They have been road warriors this year, going 7-2 away from home (after an 0-11 road record last year), so it is possible.
Georgia had Florida on the ropes at home in January, but squandered a late lead and lost in overtime. The Bulldogs have made a habit out of blowing multi-possession advantages down the stretch, and Florida has done just the opposite.
Coach Billy Donovan’s Gators have pulled a lot of close games out of the fire this year. Florida is just a little more rugged and disciplined than it has been in past seasons. It’s also true that the SEC East is down compared to previous years, but Florida has legitimately made forward strides as a program.
Keep an eye on the status of Florida’s Chandler Parsons but either way, go with Florida at home. They will look to clamp down on Trey Tompkins and really force the Bulldogs hands in this one. Georgia is too inconsistent and mercurial to be trusted in this kind of situation.
