The 2011 Big East Tournament opens with the No.16 seed DePaul Blue Demons taking on the No.9 seed Connecticut Huskies this Tuesday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
DePaul comes into this tournament having lost its last five games including a 107-59 loss to No.12 Syracuse as a 19 ½-point road favorite in its season finale. The Blue Demons bring up the rear of the conference with an overall record of 7-23 straight-up, but they are 14-14 against the spread. It has been an extremely long season in Big East play with just one win in 18 games.
DePaul lost it leading scorer Cleveland Melvin for the season with a broken thumb, so it will be up to Brandon Young, who is second on the team with 12.4 points, and Tony Freeland, who is averaging around 10 points a game, to try and keep this game somewhat close. The Blue Demons are averaging 68 points and 31 rebounds a game.
Connecticut dropped all the way to ninth in the Big East with four losses in its last five games. The Huskies closed out the regular season with a tough 70-67 loss to No.7 Notre Dame as a three-point home favorite. They finished the year 21-9 SU overall (13-11 ATS) and 9-9 SU in conference play.
Kemba Walker has also cooled off a bit down the stretch but he is still the sixth-leading scorer in the nation with 23.1 points a game. He also leads the team in assists with 4.3 and is third in rebounds with 5.2. The Huskies are averaging 72 points a game and are ranked 10th in the nation with 40 rebounds a game.
UConn won a regular season game against DePaul this season by a score of 82-62 as a 9 ½-point road favorite. You can expect at least the same margin of victory this time around as the Huskies roll to a lopsided first round win.
