Belmont Bruins vs. Georgetown Hoyas Preview

The Hoyas lost 2 of their last 3 games of the season and NCAAB lines have them as 3.5-point favorites with a total of 133.5.

In their last games Belmont beat Florida Gulf in the Atlantic Sun conference tourney finals while Georgetown lost to Cincinnati 72-70 in OT in the Big East conference quarterfinals.

This season Georgetown is 15-11 ATS with an O/U record of 13-13 and Belmont is 2-5 ATS with an O/U record of 4-3.

Georgetown will have to play good perimeter defense in this game, as the Bruins ranked 3rd in the nation in 3 pointers per game.

Belmont is led by the G trio of Kerron Johnson (14.1 ppg), Ian Clark (12.7 ppg), and Drew Hanlen (10.9 ppg). The Bruins live and die by the 3-pointer and Johnson is shooting a 3-pt FG% of 31.6%, Johnson is at 40.7%, and Hanlen is at 48.1%.  These guys will need to hit some long balls in this game to pull off the big upset.  [soliloquy id=”82219″]

With the Hoyas playing D against the 3 Belmont will need the F/C duo of Scott Saunders (10.2 ppg 5 rpg) and Mick Hedgepeth (9.8 ppg 5.8 rpg) to give the Bruins some inside buckets and also hit the glass.

Georgetown is also led by their backcourt, as their 2 leading scorers are G Jason Clark (13.9 ppg) and G Hollis Thompson (12.7 ppg) and both of these guys have been struggling in the last few games and they may get back on track facing a Belmont defense that ranks 184th in the nation in opponents’ points allowed.

Georgetown can get up and down the court, but they may want to slow the pace of the game to make it a half court contest. Still, the main key in this game will be if the Hoyas can play good D against the 3 and if Belmont can knock down the long ball.

In some betting trends for this Midwest Region 2nd round match up 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall, 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win, and they have an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games as an underdog.

Georgetown is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning % above 60%, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games, and they have an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 non-conference games.

Jason’s Pick: Belmont is a dangerous team since they can shoot lights out from deep and many are picking them to pull off the upset, but I am not one of them. I think the Hoyas will play good defense in this game and they will win and cover.
