The Week That Was: Miami (FL)

Coach Frank Haith has his Hurricanes peaking at the right time. The last-place team during the ACC regular season has won two games in Greensboro, and is now two more wins away from stealing an automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament.

Miami began its past week by concluding its regular season against Florida State on Saturday, March 6. The Hurricanes trailed for most of the game but rallied late to snag a 60-58 lead. However, a 3-pointer by Florida State’s Luke Loucks in the final two minutes carried the Seminoles to a 61-60 win.

The good thing about that loss, though, was that it didn’t occur in the one-and-done environment of the ACC Tournament, which the Canes have conquered so far. On Thursday, March 11, Miami – the No. 12 seed – clocked fifth-seeded Wake Forest, 83-62, in a result that was every bit as convincing as the final score indicated.

On Friday, March 12, the Canes took one more step forward, as they stunned fourth-seeded Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals, 70-65. UM freshman guard Durand Scott scored nine straight points down the stretch to propel this resurgent upstart to the ACC semifinals.

The Week That Was: Duke

Last Saturday, March 6, Duke clinched a share of the regular-season ACC championship by humiliating rival North Carolina, 82-50. Duke rolled to a 53-26 halftime lead by shooting 51 percent in the first half and getting transition baskets after numerous North Carolina misses. Forward Kyle Singler scored 19 points in the first half for the Blue Devils, who beat UNC at home in Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time since 2005. Duke tied Maryland for the ACC title with a 13-3 league record, but the Blue Devils won the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament.

Speaking of the ACC Tournament, it began for Duke on Friday, March 12, with an ugly but effective 57-46 win over ninth-seeded Virginia. The Blue Devils hit only 38 percent of their shots and made only 29 percent of their threes, but the Cavaliers were worse. Virginia knocked down only 32 percent of its shots and only 21 percent of its triples. Virginia was also hurt by its lack of bench points – literally. Not one Cavalier reserve scored a point in Friday’s first of four ACC quarterfinals.

Outlook & Pick:

Miami is a confident team playing freely and boldly, as so many underdogs manage to do in March. However, this game is on a neutral court, and so Miami won’t be able to benefit from a home crowd (even though many ACC fans will root against Duke). Moreover, Duke has won eight of the last 11 ACC Tournaments. It would be quite the shock if the Blue Devils and Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski lost to a No. 12 seed on Semifinal Saturday in the ACC. Duke is the clear pick here.
