It took a few years, but Virginia has totally bought into Tony Bennett’s defensive system. The Cavaliers have started the season 7-1.

George Mason has three guys averaging double figures in scoring this year. The Patriots are led by forward Ryan Pearson. Pearson is shooting 36% from beyond the arc, and he is shooting 56% from the floor overall. The Patriots have been playing solid half court defense this year.

Their opponents are shooting just 37% from the floor so far this year. On the offensive side, George Mason has benefited from some terrific offensive rebounding and second-chance opportunities. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Virginia Cavaliers style of basketball may not be the prettiest, but it goods the job done. Tony Bennett’s team plays at an extremely slow pace, and they force the opposition to be extremely patient.

The Cavs are allowing just 48 points per game so far this season. Opponents are shooting only 35% from the floor. In addition, the Cavs are fourth in all of college basketball in defensive rebounding, so they do a great job limiting second-chance points.

Forward Mike Scott is the team’s leader on the offensive end. Scott is averaging 16 points per game, and he is shooting 57% from the floor.

Virginia is great at controlling the pace on their home court. The under is 16-5 in their last 21 home games. I like the under.

Prediction: Virginia 58 George Mason 51
