Georgia State scored a win over North Carolina-Wilmington on December 6 and much like their other wins, Concordia and Southern Poly, we don’t know who they are. Jacksonville State, Hampton and Troy have beaten the Panthers, and last time out, despite 24 points from Trae Goldston, lost by five points to Florida State.

Shooting accuracy has been a problem for Georgia State which has hit a little less than 42% of its shots thus far. The Panthers haven’t done as well as they’ve liked to, especially since there is some talent around. Four of the top five scorers from last year came back to school, and there has been help coming from Joe Dukes, a Wake Forest transfer (15.1 ppg, 5.1 apg) and Xavier Hansbro, who played with Rod Barnes previously at Ole Miss.

It’s hard to get a handle on what Georgia Tech can do; the Yellow Jackets, who recorded a nice win over a Vanderbilt squad that is down a couple of notches from last year, also tasted defeat against Penn State and Illinois-Chicago, neither of whom are serious contenders for the NCAA tournament. Coach Paul Hewitt had no double-digit scorers back from last year but has some new talent in forward Gani Lawal who has emerged as the team leader at 18.6 ppg. Despite a somewhat light schedule thus far, overloaded with home games and a 15-17 season to carry over from, it’s not a team worthy of competing for the NIT, much less the NCAA tourney.

What we do know is that swingman D’Andre Bell will not play for the rest of the year due to a back injury. Also, point guard Maurice Miller, who was second in assists among all ACC point guards, has a broken nose that is being operated on today. So he is out of action for a few weeks. Lewis Clinch, who averaged nine points a game last season, was cleared to play after being academically ineligible last semester, but he’s not the floor leader Miller is.

With Dukes, Goldston and Leonard Mendez, who was State’s leading returning scorer this season, the Panthers can cause some anxiety for the Yellow Jackets’ backcourt. GSU, with less talent last season, took Georgia Tech deep into the second half before losing by five last year. It’s close again. Take the points with Georgia State, the 12.5-point underdog in the BetUS NCAA college basketball sports betting odds.
