The No. 22 Pittsburgh Panthers will collide with Big East rival No. 6 West Virginia Mountaineers at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown on Wednesday evening.

The last time these two teams met in March of 2009, the Mountaineers beat the Panthers 74-60, knocking the defending champions out of the Bug East tournament and advancing to the semifinals for the second straight season.

The Panthers have dropped three of four games after jumping out to a 5-0 start in Big East conference play including Sunday’s 70-61 loss to South Florida. Gilbert Brown scored a career-high 25 points for Pittsburgh, which dropped five spots in the national rankings. Leading scorer Ashton Gibbs chipped in with 11 points in the loss. Gibbs is averaging 16.8 ppg despite shooting just under 40 percent from the floor.

The Panthers defense has been solid limiting foes to just 60.2 ppg and holding them under 40 percent shooting, but they will be without defensive standout Jermaine Dixon, who is listed as day-to-day with an injured right foot in Wednesday’s pivotal contest.

Meanwhile, the Mountaineers edged Louisville 77-74 on Saturday for their fourth straight victory. Da’Sean Butler scored a season-high 27 points, including the go-ahead basket with 16 seconds remaining. Butler is averaging 19.5 points during the winning streak. WVU will debut freshman Deniz Kilicli in Wednesday’s contest. Kilicli was suspended for the first 20 games of the season due to an NCAA rules violation, that he had played on a Turkish team that included a professional player during the 2007-08 season.

The 6-foot-9 Kilicli was able to participate in two exhibition games earlier this year where he averaged 13 points, five rebounds and three assists per game.

The Panthers are in a slump at the moment and that certainly doesn’t look good for them against the Mountaineers, at team that seems to be peaking at the right time.

Pitt vs West Virginia Odds

The odds makers have the Mountaineers as –9 -point favorites in this one.

Winning at Morgantown is no easy task and I don’t see the Panthers muscling their way past the Mountaineers in this one.
