Ohio vs Georgetown – 7:25 P.M Thursday March 18th

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament – First Round
Ohio +13.5 (-110)
Georgetown -13.5 (-110)
Over/Under 139

The 14th seed Ohio Bobcats take on the #3 seed Georgetown Hoyas in the first round of the Midwest regional with tip-off scheduled for 7:25 on Thursday, March 18th in Providence, R.I.

Ohio made it into the field of 65 by virtue of their dramatic 81-75 overtime win over Akron in the Mid-American Conference Tournament finals. They owe much of their good fortune to junior G Armon Bassett, who was named the tournament MVP after scoring 116 points in the four games the Bobcats played.

He is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.9 points per game and along with freshman G D.J. Copper, who is averaging 13.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game are Ohio’s two biggest offensive threats.

This was their first MAC crown since 2005 and after a less than stellar regular season conference record of 7-9; once again proved that anything can happen come tournament time. They ended the season with an overall record of 21-14 and recorded an 81-64 win over top seed Kent State (23-9) in the first round.

With their championship victory, they have now won six straight heading into Thursday’s game.

Georgetown (23-10) finished the regular season ranked #22 in the country but because of a 10-8 conference record fell all the way to the 8th seed in the conference tournament. After disposing of South Florida 69-49 in their first game, they faced #1 seed Syracuse in the quarterfinals, a team they lost to twice in the regular season.

After beating the Orange by seven, 91-84 they added another impressive win to their resume by taking out Marquette 80-57 in the semi-finals.

In a classic Big East Tournament final, they barely missed pulling off yet another upset falling to West Virginia 58-60. In the loss, junior G Chris Wright had a game high 20 points and seven assists to lead the Hoyas. Junior G Austin Freeman is the team’s leading scorer; averaging 17 points per game and sophomore C Greg Monroe is averaging 16 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Wright is averaging 14.8 points and 4.1 assists.

There is enough talent on this team to take the Hoyas deep in this tournament. Playing a brutal Big East schedule should have them battle tested and ready to go.

With a 27 point win over Cincinnati, a 20 point win over South Florida and a 23 point win over Marquette heading into this game, the Hoyas have shown they can blow out teams much better than Ohio. There is just too great a gap in talent for the Bobcats to keep this one close.
