College Hoops Preview: Villanova vs. Connecticut (Jan. 21)

Two Big East powerhouses collide on Wednesday night when the Villanova Wildcats travel to Connecticut to take on the Huskies…

Big Boys in the Big East – Villanova at Connecticut

Two Big East powerhouses collide on Wednesday night when the Villanova Wildcats travel to Connecticut to take on the Huskies in what is sure to be a terrific online betting contest for sports betting fans. Villanova has done decent this season straight-up going 14 and 3 but their record against the BetUS Sportsbook spread has been downright horrid at 6 and 7. With such a terrific straight-up record, college basketball betting fans should be looking at a .600 team against the spread at least.

The Connecticut Huskies have been one of the more talked about teams this season. Even in a crowded Big East, with Syracuse, Pitt, Georgetown and Louisville, UConn has established themselves as one of the top teams in NCAAB. That makes then a terrific NCAAB betting option most of the time, right? Wrong. Even though the Huskies have a fantastic 16 and 1 straight-up record, their record against spread is at 5 and 6 and their record of 0 and 4 at home makes them a tough team to back in most games.

Game-day: 1/21/2009

Tip-off: 7:00 pm est.

Here are the BetUS NCAAB odds for this game:

Villanova Wildcats +9 -110
Connecticut Huskies -9 -110

Here are a few online NCAAB wagering trends that might help us find a good online bet in this game.

The Villanova Wildcats are 1 and 4 against the spread in their last 5 games against a Big East rival.
The Home team is 8 and 1 against the spread in the last 9 meetings between these two teams. The Connecticut Huskies are 2 and 7 against the spread in their last 9 games at home.
The Favorite is 5 and 1 against the spread in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.

‘Nova has excellent balance across the board with Dante Cunningham leading the way averaging 17 points a game. That’s not too many points and because the ‘Cats play a three guard rotation offense, Cunningham often times racks up assists as well as putting the ball in the basket.

But that could be Villanova’s downfall in this game. The Connecticut Huskies have a verifiable NBA type front-court with Hasheem Thabeet leading the way. The brilliant big man scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in his last start. Those are dominating numbers on the college basketball court.

I wish I could make a case for Villanova in this game, but I really can’t. The Connecticut Huskies are one of the top two teams in the Big East along with the Louisville Cardinals. That means that UConn should have their way with a ‘Nova team that will be very good come March but is going to have to struggle against fellow Big East opponents until then.

The stats say Huskies. The trends say Huskies and I say Huskies.

Nova vs. UConn Prediction:

I’ll be making an online basketball wager on the Connecticut Huskies to cover the 9 point spread against the Villanova Wildcats in this game.
