Tar Heels vs Cyclones Pick – NCAA Tournament

The Cyclones were among the group of highly seeded teams that let their opponents linger for much longer than expected. This was a game for the first half but in the second half Iowa State pulled away posting some impressive offensive numbers including: 93 points and 64% shooting from the field for the game. Iowa State

This is an offense first team in their first round of action it is looking like they are ready to make a go at the top team in the nation.

All of Iowa State’s key players had strong games to start the tournament. Without a rim protector to be concerned with the combination of Melvin Ejim and Georges Niang made 17 of 24 shots against NC Central.

Third forward Dustin Hogue was also very sharp shooting 6 for 8. The only Cyclone who did not shoot it well was PG DeAndre Kane, but his all around game was on display as usual as he had 14 points, 7 boards and 5 assists. With Niang out due to injury they are going to need him even more than expected.

Iowa State will be challenged by the length the Tar Heels can throw at them but if they continue with their hot shooting they should be able to dispatch North Carolina.

They just have so many weapons and will be happy to have this game at a fast pace which the Tar Heels are not good at this season.

North Carolina

Providence pushed North Carolina to the limit just as I expected (actually I thought the Friars would win).

Nevertheless the Tar Heels advance but I doubt they are doing so with a great amount of confidence. This team looked so good during a long winning streak but even in this win was not very sharp.

Certainly they do not look like a team that is about to go on a run of any significance.

North Carolina got the win on Friday but they have to be very concerned that they are still getting next to nothing from SG Leslie McDonald. He was terrible shooting 2 for 8 and if they do not get 16 points from Brice Johnson off the bench they probably lose.

They also need to be concerned with the fact that they gave up 36 points to Bryce Cotton. It is not very often that Marcus Paige is outplayed but another top PG is coming his way.

UNC should have lost against Providence. The question is whether the escape was a reprieve or just delaying the inevitable. I think it is more of the latter and well will see them bow out gracefully against the Cyclones.

I am was surprised to see the opening number on this one so small.

Looks like too much respect for a very public team.

Spread prediction: Iowa State -1.5
