North Carolina Tar Heels: Final Four Breakdown

North Carolina Tar Heels have all the pressure on them as the odds on favorite to win it all. This is the third year in a row that they have been the favorite for almost the entire season. Last year this UNC team fell short of winning the Championship losing to the eventual champion in the semifinal game.  Coach Roy Williams and this experienced team have had a one track mind all year all focusing on winning the Championship in 2009.  Now the Tar Heels are only two games away from realizing all their goals.

UNC is an impressive 32-4 straight up but are a very average 15-19 ATS. Obviously throughout the season UNC was very poor ATS but in the tournament have been a perfect 4-0 ATS. No one is surprised that UNC is in the Final Four as they were the odds on favorite all year to win it all.

Tyler Hansborough is coming off his player of the year 2008 and if possible is flying under the radar this year. In fact he did even win the conference player of the year with Ty Lawson winning it this year. Even though his stats are not quite as good as last year he is a better team player and Hansborough is the ultimate team player. If UNC is going to win they will need him to average 18 plus points and 10 plus rebounds in the Final Four.

Ty Lawson and the health of his toe might be the most important factor if the Tar Heels win the National Championship this year. Lawson’s improvement from last year is the reason why this team is back in the Final Four. Lawson can not only get all of his teammates involved but this year he can also get you 20 plus points. When healthy no one can stay in front of Lawson in man to man and when you play him zone he now nails the outside three point shot.

The other two UNC players that are vital for there success is Wayne Ellington and Danny Greene. Both of these two are very similar in that they are great all around players. These two are so talented they can play great defense and can score in many different ways.

UNC is loaded with talent having as many as 5 future NBA lottery picks. But for a team with all of this talent they don’t have good guard depth. They really only have three good guards and when Lawson goes down have no dependable back up. Depth could be one of the few weaknesses on an otherwise stellar team.

Coach Roy Williams does not have a good history of success in the Final Four with only one Championship in his six appearances. Even Coach Williams would have trouble screwing up this team. Surely this year he doesn’t screw it up for Tar Heel Nation!

There are just too many weapons on this team to keep them from cutting down the nets on Monday Night. The only doubt was Ty Lawson’s toe and that doesn’t seem to be a major problem. I was thinking shades of 1985 with a ‘Nova upset but I just don’t see it.
