Mississippi St. vs. Kentucky 1:00 P.M. Sunday, March 14th

Southeast Conference Tournament Finals
Mississippi State + 7.5 (-110)
Kentucky -7.5 (-110)
Over/Under 138.5

The #1 seed from the SEC West; Mississippi State will face the #1 seed from the SEC East, Kentucky in the conference tournament final this afternoon in Nashville. The Wildcats are looking at a #1 seed in the NCAA’s while the Bulldogs are still fighting for a spot in the field of 65.

After finishing the regular season with ugly losses to Auburn (80-89) and Tennessee (59-75), many people thought that Mississippi State (23-10) would have to win the SEC Tournament to make it into the NCAA’s.

After two tournament wins, including a 10 point 62-52 upset of Vanderbilt, they find themselves in the final with a chance to do just that. In their opening round game against Florida, the Bulldogs built an 11 halftime lead and held on to win 75-69. Senior G Barry Stewart led the way with 17 points including five straight free throws late in the game to help seal the victory.

In the win over the Commodores, Stewart scored a game high 14 points and senior F Jarvis Varnado and sophomore G Dee Bost added 11 to advance their team to the finals.

After going 29-2 in the regular season and 14-2 in SEC play, everyone expected Kentucky to be in this game and they did not disappoint. After grinding out a 73-67 win over Alabama in the quarterfinals, they completely destroyed Tennessee 74-45 to advance to the finals. The Wildcats have a formidable lineup that features a pair of freshman phenomenon’s; G John Wall and F DeMarcus Cousins. Wall is averaging 16.9 points and 6.3 assists per game and Cousins is averaging 15.5 points and 10.2 rebounds.

Junior F Patrick Patterson (14.7 points and 7.4 rebounds) and freshman G Eric Bledsoe (10.6 points) help round out one of the best starting lineups in all of college basketball.

Regardless of the outcome of this game the Wildcats are all but assured of a #1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, but something tells me that right now going into the dance as the 2010 SEC Tournament champions is their top priority.

Mississippi State is still fighting for their NCAA Tournament lives as nothing short of a victory in this game will guarantee them a spot in the field of 65. Unfortunately they have to accomplish this feat against one of the best teams in the country. When these two teams met in the regular season, the Bulldogs took the game into overtime, only to lose 75-81. This time the result will be the same, but it will not be nearly as close.
