Minnesota vs. Ohio State – 3:30 P.M. Sunday, March 14th

Big Ten Conference Tournament Finals
Minnesota + 4 (-110)
Ohio State -4 (-110)
Over/Under 130

Upstart #6 seed Minnesota has played their way into the Big Ten Conference Tournament final this afternoon in Indianapolis against #1 seeded Ohio State. While the Buckeye’s ticket to the dance has already been punched, the Gophers may still need to win this one to guarantee an invitation.

After going 18-12 in the regular season and just 9-9 in conference play, Minnesota came into the Big 10 Tournament as one of several bubble teams that needed a strong performance to make it into the NCAA Tournament and after three straight wins they still need one more to guarantee them a spot.

Despite the fact that they already beat #3 seed Michigan State 72-67 in overtime and thoroughly embarrassed #2 seed Purdue 69-42 to make it into the finals, they may find themselves on the outside looking in if they lose today. The Gophers will rely heavily on senior G Lawrence Westbrook, junior G Blake Hoffarber, and senior F Damian Johnson to get it done.

Westbrook leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game, while Hoffarber is averaging 10.5 and Johnson is averaging 10.1.

Ohio State (26-7) came into this tournament as the #7 ranked team in the country after winning 10 out of their last 11 regular season games, but so far it has been nothing but a struggle to get to this point. In their quarterfinal game they looked less than spectacular, needing a miraculous last second shot to beat Michigan 69-68 after blowing a 10 point halftime lead.

They needed two overtimes to get past Illinois, 88-81 in another hard fought, close battle. The Buckeyes are led by one of the best players in the country, junior G-F Evan Turner.

In the game against the Wolverines, he drained a 37 footer at the buzzer to win the game and ended with a team high 18 points. He followed this up with a 31 point effort including scoring 12 in the two overtimes to help his team beat the Fighting Illini and reach the finals. Ohio State has a solid supporting cast consisting of sophomore G William Buford, junior G Jon Diebler, and junior G-F David Lighty, but this team will go only as far as Turner can take them.

Given the fact that Ohio State has had to pull out all the stops to win their last two games you would think that Minnesota should be able to keep this game close enough to at the very least cover the spread. Couple that with the fact that the Gophers probably need to win this game to make it into the dance, this one should go down to the wire.
