The No.9 Michigan State Spartans will tip off at Frank Erwin Special Events Center against the #2 Texas Longhorns on Tuesday night.

These two teams have met in November or December in each of the past three seasons, with the Spartans winning the three games – all on neutral courts – by an average of 4.0 points. The last meeting was on Dec 20, 2008. The Longhorns fell to the Spartans 67-63. MSU leads all-time series 3-2, having beaten Texas in each of the last three nonconference seasons.

Texas comes into Tuesdays match up fresh off a big win against the No. 10 North Carolina Tar Heels. Four Longhorns scored at least 20 points apiece Saturday in a 103-90 win. Dexter Pittman had 23 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in the win. Pittman is averaging 14.6 points per game and a nation-best 73.4 percent from the field. The Longhorns have been won its first 10 games by an average of 28.8 points and is averaging 87.2 points per game.

Deilvez Yearby had 25 points as the Spartans downed IPFW 80-58 on Saturday. Raymar Morgan and Delvon Roe scored 14 points apiece while Kalin Lucas added 10 in the win. MSU’s forward rotation of Morgan, Roe and Draymond Green has shown promise, but not the consistency the Spartans need to match up against Texas. However, Kalin Lucas might be the best guard Texas has faced, averaging 16.1 points and shooting 50.4 percent from the field.

I think the Longhorns will be facing one of the tougher opponents on their schedule thus far in the season, with the exception of their win over the 2008 champion Tar Heels.

They will need to capitalize on every opportunity they get to put the Spartans away early. They will need to play physical particulary in the paint as they did against UNC, using their size advantage over a much smaller MSU team.

While the Spartens have beaten Texas the last three times they met, this is the by far the best Longhorn team they will face. They are more physical than the Spartens and have a mulitude of players that can put the ball in the bucket.

I like Texas – 8.5 in this game.
