Matchup Stats | ATS Insider Preview

Wisconsin’s overall numbers don’t look all that great, but the team has gotten by, largely on the back of strong defensive play. In their most recent game, the Badgers were held to a season-low 48 points, but were able to get past Virginia in a 48-38 win.

Wisconsin’s offense was nowhere to be found in their last game. The team hit on just 28.8 percent of their shots from the floor and just 21.7 percent of their three pointers in a game which they dished out only seven assists. Guard Josh Gasser was the team’s only player to score in double digits, scoring 11 on the night, and doing so with only two field goal attempts in the game. A positive for the unit is that they turned the ball over just seven times.

The team took care of business on the other end though, allowing Virginia to hit on just 23.4 percent of their shots, and just 9.1 percent of their three pointers. No Cavalier scored in double digits in the contest, and the team was limited to just eight offensive rebounds

While Wisconsin is flying high, Marquette was knocked out of the Top 25 on Monday after racking up a pair of losses against unranked opponents last week.  A big part of the team’s struggles have been their inability to shoot from long range, hitting on just 27.2 percent of their three pointers. That was especially evident in the team’s last game, a 67-59 loss to San Diego State.

The Golden Eagles hit on just 1 of 11 three point attempts in that one. The impact of that could be seen throughout the team. Leading scorer Davante Gardner scored only six points in the game. The team shot just 42.0 percent from the field and turned the ball over 15 times.

Defensively, the team had the opposite problem. The Golden Eagles allowed the Aztecs o hit on just 39.3 percent of their shots, but 6 of 12 three point attempts, good for a 50 percent average.

While their victories may not always be the prettiest, Wisconsin has been getting the job done. Against a Marquette team that has been struggling to score the rock, the Badgers’ smothering defense is not what the doctor ordered.

The Badgers are 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games.

The play: Wisconsin -8.5
