Team records:
Texas Longhorns (22-6)
Texas A&M Aggies (19-8)

The No. 22 Texas A&M Aggies will look to increase their home-unbeaten streak to 14-1 when they face off against Big 12 rivals the No. 21 Texas Longhorns on Saturday at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas.

Texas held off the Aggies 72-67 in overtime the last time these two teams met on Jan 16, 2010, in Austin. The win improved Texas’ record to 17-0 and earned them the No. 1 ranking in the nation.

Since then the Longhorns have gone 5-6, but have managed to string together a pair of wins with a 69-59 win over Oklahoma State on Wednesday night. Six-foot-ten senior center Dexter Pittman had 16 points and eight rebounds while shutting down Big 12 scoring leader James Anderson in the win. After starting the season strong, Pittman had almost faded away, averaging only 6.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in conference play, but had a better showing against the Cowboys. Turnovers and poor shot selection along with problems with their transition defense have created problems for the Longhorns, which have contributed to their sharp fall from the No. 1 position they held just a short time ago.

They’re shot at a Big 12 title has been extinguished, but a berth in the NCAA Tournament still seems a strong likelihood, barring a total collapse over the closing stretch.

In the meantime A&M has won seven of its last ten, but lost for the second time in three contests, 70-66 to the No. 24 Baylor Bears on Wednesday night. Aggies leading scorer Donald Sloan led A&M with 22 points while Bryan Davis had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and B.J. Holmes added 11 points in the loss. A&M got within one a final with 50.5 seconds remaining, but the Bears were able to get three from the stripe to pull off the win.

The Aggies are generating a pedestrian 72.1 ppg while holding opponents to mere 65.0 ppg on 40.9 percent field goal efficiency.

The Aggies will need to shut down Texas’ Pittman, forcing the Longhorns to beat them from outside the paint –an area that Texas has struggled over a 10-game stretch.
