St. Mary’s Gaels vs. St. John’s Red Storm Preview

On the season St. Mary’s is 4-1-1 ATS and they have an O/U record of 1-1 and St. John’s is 4-1-1 ATS and they have an Under record of 0-5-1.

This season St. John’s is 5-0 at home and St. Mary’s is 1-0 on the road.

In their last games St. John’s beat Fordham 74-53 and St. Mary’s lost to Northern Arizona 73-71.

St. John’s is off to their best start since the 2009-2010 season at they are an 8-point betting favorite tonight in the Big Apple. They have won 4 straight and will be facing a St. Mary’s squad that has lost 2 of heir last 3 games.

This is the first game of the season for St. Mary’s facing a ranked team. St. John’s only loss to the season came to a top 25 team in Gonzaga, which is in the same conference as St. Mary’s.

In 4 games since Red Storm lost to Gonzaga they have been playing great defense holding opponents to an average of 54.8 ppg on 35.8% shooting. On the other side of the coin the Gaels’ defense has been struggling in their last 3 games giving up an average of 74 ppg on 52.3% shooting.

St. Mary’s has never beaten a ranked team on the road.

D’Angelo Harrison (19.7 ppg) is the leading scorer for the Red Storm, who is a senior laden and experienced team that has 4 players averaging in double figures. In the last 3 games Harrison has averaged 24 ppg.

The defense of the Red Storm has to worry about C Brad Waldow, who is averaging 21.6 ppg and 10.8 rpg. However, he obviously needs help, as in the loss to Northern Arizona he had a big game going for 25 points and 15 boards and the Gaels still lost.

Aaron Bright and Kerry Carter are the other 2 Gaels averaging in double figures and are averaging a combined 27.4 ppg. However, in the Northern Arizona game they did combine to score 20 points, but each player was only 4/12 from the floor.

St. Mary’s coach Randy Bennett stated after the loss to NAU, “We’re not very good defensively. Our guards don’t defend. We’ve got to get better there.”

That is not good heading into this game, as the top 3 scorers for the Red Storm are guards.
