Matchup Stats | ATS Insider Preview

The Shockers became the first team to 35-0 with their tournament-opening win, while Kentucky took care of business against Kansas State in their tournament opener.

The Shockers continued their march toward a perfect season with a win over Cal Poly in their tournament opener. Wichita State has been largely untested this season, and the selection committee surely kept that in mind when lining them up in arguable the toughest region of the year.

The team’s slate of tough games begins on Sunday against a talented Kentucky team, with a game against Louisville right around the corner.

Kentucky began their tournament with a 56-49 win over Kansas State in a battle of the Wildcats. Star freshman Julius Randle led the way for Kentucky with the game’s only double-double, racking up 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, and 15 boards.

Teammate and fellow big man Willie Cauley-Stein came off the bench to score just two points and record four personal fouls, though the rest of his stat line was plenty impressive, as he recorded eight rebounds, four steals, four blocks, and an assist.

Guard Aaron Harrison had 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while brother Andrew Harrison had only seven points, but added five assists and five rebounds.

Not surprisingly, Wichita State didn’t have any trouble disposing of Cal Poly, doing away with them on the back of a 64-37 win. The Mustangs were held to just 20.7 percent shooting in the game. Shockers forward Cleanthony Early paced all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting, adding seven rebounds.

He was the only players in the game to reach double-digits in scoring, with many Wichita State players sitting early in the blowout.

Many guessed that the Wildcats would be favored if this potential matchup were to become a reality. Wichita State has been largely untested, and while Kentucky cannot lay claim to a strong path themselves after coming out of the weak SEC, the talent gap in this game is just too wide to overlook.

The total in this game is also worth a look. Both teams can hold their own at the defensive end, and the early start adds reason to believe points could be hard to come by in what should be a tightly contested matchup.

The Wildcats are 5-1 ATS in their last six NCAA Tournament games, and 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.

The under is 6-2 in the Wildcats’ last eight games overall, and 9-1 in their last 10 games played on a Sunday.

The play: Kentucky +3.5, Under 134
