Reeling Loyola Lions Host Fighting Irish

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0 SU) got their 2008-09 season off to a solid start with their season-opening 94-58 win over South Carolina-Upstate. Things haven’t been so good for the Loyola Marymount Lions (0-3 SU, 1-1 ATS, 0-2 O/U) who have dropped three straight games in the BetUS Sportsbook to kick off their season.

Tonight, both teams will be trying to pick up a win when they battle at Gersten Pavilion.

Notre Dame All-American forward Luke Harangody dominated the Spartans, scoring 30 points grabbing 14 rebounds in No. 8 Notre Dame’s rout on Sunday.

It was the fourth 30-point performance and 26th double-double in 66 career games for the junior, who averaged 20.4 points and 10.6 rebounds last season.

“If he’s playing with one guy (on him), we’re going to keep throwing it in there and letting him go to work,” Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said.

Zach Hillesland added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Irish while fellow senior Luke Zeller chipped in a career-high 18 points off the bench.

Notre Dame also tied a school record with its 38th consecutive home victory.

“Most of the buckets I got out there were because other people created them for me, and that’s why it’s so fun to play on this team,” Harangody said.

Loyola Marymount has eight new scholarship players and is averaging just 53.7 points on the season.

Sophomore guard Vernon Teel scored a season-high 23 on Sunday in the Lions’ 64-55 loss to UC Davis on Sunday.

“We came out flat, playing three games in three days with a roster who has not played together,” said Lions coach Bill Bayno, who’s in his first season with the school after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers.

NCAAB Odds

Notre Dame -21½ -110
Loyola Marymount +21½ -110

Analysis: I wouldn’t think twice about making this selection tonight because the Irish are going to roll to a 30-point win! Loyola doesn’t have a single player on its roster taller than Harangody and will likely get abused inside all night long. Take the Fighting Irish to cover the big spread tonight with room to spare!
