Villanova -9.5

The Huskies travel to the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia to take on the Wildcats in a match-up of two teams going in different directions in the Big East. Villanova sits atop the conference with a one game lead over Syracuse and Connecticut is four games under .500, falling to the bottom of the pack.

Connecticut has had their share of problems this season starting with the health of head coach Jim Calhoun. After missing the last 3 ½ weeks due to an undisclosed illness, his team lost seven out of nine games. Their overall record stands at 14-11 but they are a dismal 4-8 in the Big East. In the game against Syracuse last Wednesday, the Huskies did show some signs of life as they were able to keep the game close at the end after erasing a 16 point deficit in the second half. Unfortunately their effort fell a bit short in the 67-72 loss. In Calhoun’s return to the bench, they followed this up with an embarrassing 48-60 loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats in front of the hometown crowd. This was the lowest point total for the Huskies since 2002. One of the bright spots for this team has been Jerome Dyson who leads the team in scoring, averaging 18.8 points per game. Stanley Robinson leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.6 per game and is the second leading scorer with 16 points per game.

Villanova finds them self back on top in the Big East after Syracuse’s shocking loss to Louisville last night. Before today’s new rankings, they are currently 5th in the Coaches poll with an overall record of 22-2 and are 11-1 in conference play but will most likely be moving back up. After losing to eighth ranked Georgetown 90-103 back on February 6th they have won their last two. A week ago they grinded out a huge 82-75 win over #4 West Virginia in Morgantown with Scottie Reynolds leading the way with 22 points. In a 92-81 win over Providence, Reynolds and Corey Fisher each scored 22 points and Antonia Pena added 15 points and 12 rebounds to help seal the victory. Through 24 games Reynolds is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 19 points per game. Fisher is averaging 14.2 points and Pena is averaging 7.7 rebounds per game.

The Huskies are very close to the point of having to write this season off as a lost cause and facing the Wildcats in Philly will not help to make things better.

Betting Trends:

Villanova is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
Villanova is 13-1 SU in its last 14 games
Villanova is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games when playing at home against Connecticut
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Connecticut’s last 6 games
The total has gone OVER in 6 of Connecticut’s last 8 games when playing Villanova
The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Connecticut’s last 14 games on the road

Free UConn vs. Villanova Pick:

Villanova -9.5. The big question tonight will be can they keep this one close enough to cover the 9 ½ points. While I expect a better performance than the one they turned in against the Bearcats, Villanova is just too good of a team right now for that to happen.
