The No.4 Jayhawks (6-0) held off Arizona for an 87-79 win in the final of the Las Vegas Invitational, led by the Morris brothers, Marcus (16 points, nine boards) and Markieff (15 points).
The Morris brothers were two of six Jayhawks in double figures, while Kansas shot 54.5%, along with forcing 19 turnovers. The Bruins (3-2) have dropped two straight after an 89-85 loss to Virginia Commonwealth in the consolation game of the NIT Tip-Off, and they lost due to two reasons: turnovers (21) and free-throw discrepancy (12 attempts to 26 for VCU). The No.5 Wildcats (6-1) rolled to a 19-point halftime lead and never looked back in an 85-61 romp over Emporia State, led by 26 points from Jacob Pullen, who set the school record for three-pointers.
The Wildcats outrebounded Emporia State 42-25, but they were a poor 10-of-21 from the foul line, and that has to be fixed during this month, before the Big 12 season starts. The Cougars (5-0) jumped out to a 27-0 lead in an 84-36 rout of Sacramento State, but they also shot 10-of-21 from the charity stripe, which means there could be a lot of rebounds at stake on Friday night.
Betting services may favor the Wildcats on the road, but they lost 58-57 in their last trip to Pullman back in 2005. The Cougars will have to tighten up on defense, because Kansas State surely isn’t Sacramento State, and coach Frank Martin has been on the Wildcats since they got thumped by top-ranked Duke last week, so you can expect K-State to come right at Wazzu right from the jump. Washington State is a good team at home, but Kansas State has Pullen and a very strong frontcourt to lead them to a win in your sports book.
