Akron: 22-8 SU, 13-12-2 ATS

The MAC East Division title and the conference’s overall regular season championship will be decided tonight when the Kent State Golden Flashes tip off against arch rival the Akron Zips at the James A Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio.

The Golden Flashes pounded the Zips 87-70 in the first meeting this season and owns a 67-61 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams.

It might be a different story this time as the Zips are on a hot streak, winning seven of its last eight games, while 13 of the team’s victories this season have come at home. They are fresh off a 74-68 win over Bowling Green last Saturday. Brett McKnight, the teams only player averaging double figures in scoring (10.5), scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, while Jimmy Conyers added 12 points in the win. The Zips earned a 33-24 rebounding advantage, the key factor in the victory. Akron uses a unique 10-player rotation, which means no one player is putting up staggering numbers.

However, they are getting production from many of their players and the entire squad is playing unselfish, solid two-way basketball. The Zips are generating 70.2 ppg while allowing 63.8 ppg on just 40.9 percent shooting to their opponents.

Across the state in Kent the Golden Flashes has won four straight and 12 of their last 13 games including a 66-58 victory over Miami-Ohio last Saturday. Justin Greene netted 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Frank Henry-Ala added 12 points in the win. The Golden Flashes played tremendous defense limiting the RedHawks to a mere 37 percent shooting, while turning over the ball just four times. The team is balanced by Greene, who is averaging 14.1 ppg to go along with 6.8 rpg while shooting 54.8 percent from the field, and senior guard Chris Singletary who is netting 11.8 ppg and he has 111 assists in addition to 48 steals.

Kent State is generating 70.4 ppg while allowing 64.1 ppg to foes.

This game will be much closer than the first meeting between the two teams.
