#4 seed Villanova takes on the #5 seeded Marquette Golden Eagles in the Big East Tournament Quarter Finals with each team trying to make a statement to improve their seeding position in the NCAA Tournament, which starts next week.
Villanova (24-6, 13-5) comes into this game needing to recapture the momentum that had them ranked #3 in the country earlier this year. Once thought to be a lock for a #1 seed, they have to avoid losing their fifth game in their last seven outings and falling further in the NCAA seeding process. A strong showing in this tournament could still get them at a number two seed, but a loss would probably drop them down to a four or five. The main thing they need to do is to start making shots from the field. They are a team that lives and dies from three point range and lately they have been getting slaughtered.
This all begins and ends with their leading scorer, senior guard Scottie Reynolds. In his last game against West Virginia he finished 5 for 16 from the field and just 1 for 9 from three point range.
These kinds of performances will almost guarantee that Villanova’s postseason will be a short one.
Marquette (21-10, 11-7) went 9-2 in their last 11 games in the regular season and just squeaked out a two point 57-55 win over a pesky St.Johns team in their first game of this tournament. The Golden Eagles should match up well with the Wildcats as they came very close to beating them in both games they played in the regular season, losing each by just two points. 
With Villanova struggling a bit, this could be the perfect time to pull off the upset. They are led by senior F Lazar Hayward, who is averaging 18 points per game and 7.8 rebounds.
Junior G-F Jimmy Butler is the team’s second leading scorer, averaging 15.2 points per game along with 6.5 rebounds. Hayward scored 20 in the win over the Red Storm and will need another big game to get his team past Villanova.
Marquette gave Villanova all they could handle both times they played this year and this afternoon should be no different. Much of this game depends on how each team’s top scorer shoots from the field. Look for Reynolds to regain his touch just in time as the Wildcats pull out the win and cover to advance to the semi-finals.
