The team’s last met in the Big East Tournament last season with the Golden Eagles posting the 67-61 upset victory, and this game is sure to provide some spills and thrills.

While WVU’s Kevin Jones may be the favorite to win Big East player of the year honors, Marquette’s Jae Crowder deserves a look, and garnered some of that attention on Wednesday when he scored 27 points in a 82-65 romp over Rutgers.

The Golden Eagles (23-5, 12-3 Big East) won for the 11th time in their last 12 games and remained in a second-place tie in the Big East and are a lock for the NCAA Tournament as they enter play on Friday night looking for their first-ever victory in Morgantown.

Marquette has played so-so on the road, sporting a record of 5-4, and rank 26th in all of college basketball this season in scoring with a 76.7 points per game average.

Crowder has averaged 26.3 points and 8.3 rebounds in the past three games for the Golden Eagles, and has scored at least 20 in five of his last seven contests.[soliloquy id=”82219″]

He will no doubt be making a push as he goes against the Mountaineers’ Jones, who averages 20.3 points and a league-best 11.2 rebounds.

However, even though Jones has done his part this season, WVU has slid of late, losing three straight home losses to Big East competition, and while losing three of four and six of eight, including a 71-44 defeat at Notre Dame on Wednesday.

As a team, they shot a season-worst 31.5 percent, and have struggled this season from the three point line, hitting on just 31.4 percent and ranking 283rd in all of college basketball.

Unlike the Golden Eagles who are a shoe in for the tourney, the situation is much more desperate for West Virginia (17-11, 7-8), which is 1-6 against ranked opponents.

The Mountaineers have won all four home games against Marquette, but the Golden Eagles defeated them twice last season.

The Golden Eagles are playing much better at the moment, and unless Jones gets helps from the rest of the squad I am afraid that Crowder and Darius Johnson-Odom will be too much here.
