Many people overlooked them during the regular season, but the Tennessee Volunteers finished as strong as anyone in the SEC other than Kentucky. Tennessee may well be in the NCAA Tournament, especially if they can win this game.

Mississippi is a talented team that has been up and down all year long. Let’s take a quick look at this SEC quarterfinal matchup.

Andy Kennedy’s Mississippi Rebels have quietly won four straight games. They dispatched of Auburn nicely in the first round of this tournament. Murphy Holloway is the team’s best overall player. Holloway is a 6’7 forward who can run the floor and his length makes him tough on the defensive end as well.

Terrance Henry is the team’s leading scorer at 12.1 points per contest. Jarvis Summers has turned into the reliable long range shooter for the Rebels. Summers knocks down 42% from beyond the arc.

Mississippi is one of the worst teams in the nation from the free throw line. The Rebels shoot a miserable 59.7% from the line as a team. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Cuonzo Martin has this Tennessee team peaking at the right time.

The Volunteers weren’t even on anyone’s radar a few weeks ago, but they have won eight of their last nine games. During that span they defeated Florida on the road as well as Vanderbilt at home.

Jarnell Stokes was a high-schooler earlier this year, but he graduated in December and he has been a huge reason why this team has been much better of late. Stokes is averaging 9.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Nine guys average at least 15 minutes per game, so depth is a strength for this Vols team.

Trae Golden runs the show at point guard, and he has proven to be a clutch play maker.

The Volunteers probably can’t make the NCAA Tournament unless they win at least this game, and I expect them to scratch out a win here.

Tennessee has the momentum and that is very big this time of the year.

Prediction: Tennessee 68 Mississippi 62
