The Huskies will look to rebound when they open conference play against the surprising 10-3 California Golden Bears.

Washington

With signature wins over San Diego State and Oklahoma to put on their resume, the undefeated Huskies looked to be rolling right along into conference play. With the likelihood of looking ahead, Washington scored just 57 points and shot 34.3 percent from the field in their home loss to Stony Brook. Washington saw a 16 point gone in the blink of an eye along with their undefeated record.

Removing the Stony Brook debacle from their mind, Washington is one of the best teams in the nation. They rank 21st overall in rebounding (41.0 per game), and are scoring 70.8 points a contest. On average, they’re holding the opposition to just 58.7 points a game.

Led by Sophomore PG Nigel Williams-Goss, who sores 13.4 points a game, Washington 5-0 in away/neutral sight games. Goss struggled from the field, like the rest of his teammates, in the loss to Stony Brook where he shot just 5 of 14 from the field for 10 points. Junior C Robert Upshaw leads the away for the 21st ranked rebounding team in the country with 7.4 per game.

Washington must learn to close out games and shoot better from the free throw stripe, as they shoot just 72.5 percent in late game free throw situations.

California

The Golden Bears have showed they can compete with the best, but have also shown they can lose to just about anyone. California knocked off then #23 Syracuse earlier in the season, and stayed close with #10 Texas and #6 Wisconsin for a majority of the game, only to see them pull away in the end. In their most recent outing, California fell victim to CSU Bakersfield 55-52.

The injury bug has hit California as one of their leading scorers Jabari Bird is expected to miss Friday night’s contest with Washington. Bird is scoring 11.7 points and 2.5 assists a game. With Bird down, expect Tyler Wallace (19.2 ppg) to step up and fill the scoring void. Wallace continues to light up the scoreboard, as he’s scored back-to-back 17 point games.

California is 7-2 inside Haas Pavilion this season as they’ve averaged 70.2 points in home contests. They’ve gone 4-4-1 ATS in those 9 games.

The Golden Bears have dropped 2 in a row, both at home.
