NCAAB: Cavaliers vs Tar Heels Predictions

College basketball  betting action sees the Virginia Cavaliers taking on the North Carolina Tar Heels on Monday February 2 at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  Cappers Picks provides free NCAAB handicapping tips all season long.

Virginia looks to recover quickly from their first loss of the season but North Carolina is hardly an easy place to get your mojo back.

Virginia

The perfect season is over. It can be tough to respond well when your first loss of the year is so late in the season and the task is made even more difficult by the fact that Virginia is in the toughest part of their schedule.

They just lost at home to Duke, have to visit North Carolina on Monday and then have Louisville at home after that. If they can not get this victory they could be looking a three game losing streak pretty quickly. The loss to Duke didn’t reveal all that much other than that the ACC is really good at the top.

The Cavs win with defense and pace. There are some really good players on this team but they lack that player with a killer instinct who can just take over a game, which is why I fear that no matter how many wins they put this season they may not be a championship contender. In the last game Malcolm Brogdon led with 17 points but only one other player cracked double figures.

Getting the game at their pace against UNC will be a priority but harder to do on the road.

North Carolina

The Tar Heels have been playing some really good basketball of late but they too are also coming off a loss, losing at Louisville in overtime on Saturday. Even though they are at home North Carolina is going to have to be focused on executing. If they do they should be able to have some success with their bigs, who are among the more effective scorers in the nation. Virginia is a great defensive team but it is not because they have an eraser at the back end. They just push you off your spots all game long.

Marcus Paige is leading the Tar Heels in scoring but he is also leading the team in disappointment. In the last game he was outplayed by Chris Jone but in this one he probably has a better chance to in his matchup. The same goes for those bigs I mentioned.

Against a very long and active front line of Louisville Kennedy Meeks and Brice Johnson only combined for 11 points. They need to double that for UNC to have a chance in this one.

NCAAB Handicapping Trends:

  • Over is 9-3 in UVA last 12 Mon. games.
  • UVA are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 Mon. games.
  • UVA are 29-11-2 ATS in their last 42 games overall.
  • UNC are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
  • Over is 6-2-1 in UNC last 9 home games.
  • Under is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings.
  • UVA are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

NCAAB Prediction:  Virginia -1.5

The pace might get away from the Cavs a little bit in this one but I think they will respond.

NCAAB Score prediction:  Virginia 70 – North Carolina 65

This is a chance to buy low on both teams but I will take UVA which has been more consistent this year.
