These might be the strongest brands in the AAC but they are looking up a lots of teams right now. Neither team can afford a loss.

Connecticut

This has been a disappointing season for the Huskies. Sure there was no expectation that they were going to repeat as champs but they were a good bet to be among the contenders in the pretty light AAC.

So far they are tied with Memphis for 5th place in the conference making this an important game for both programs. There is still talent in Storrs but this team struggles to score consistently and has not been able to compete well on the road. The brand is only partly responsible for that poor 8-13 ATS mark.

Now that the backcourt is finally all his Ryan Boatright is making the most of it. He leads the team in scoring at 18ppg and is tops in assists too, accounting for about half of the team’s offense. After Boatright consistent scoring is hard to find as only one other player averages in double figures.

Big man Amida Brimah is still developing and can be a force – see the 40 he scored against Coppin State. He needs to start averaging at least a third of that.

Memphis

You can almost attach everything I wrote above about UConn to Memphis too, except for the fact that the Huskies have overachieved in the recent past by winning championships. I think the seat might be getting a little hot for Tigers coach Josh Pastner who just doesn’t have much to show for the talent that has been running its way through Memphis. This year the talent pool has been a little shallower but they should still not find themselves fighting to stay in the middle of the AAC.

The Tigers will be shorthanded for this one as their leading scorer Austin Nichols is out with a bum ankle. This team is definitely strongest up front so Nichols’ absence has opened up opportunities for Shaq Goodwin, the team’s leading rebounder.

A year ago the program was stocked with guards but now their guard play is suspect. JC transfer Avery Woodson has proven a reliable threat but beyond that it is tough to know what they are going to get from game to game.

NCAAB Handicapping Trends:

  • UCONN are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
  • Under is 8-2 in UCONN last 10 Thu. games.
  • UCONN are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 Thu. games.
  • Under is 9-3 in MEM last 12 Thu. games.
  • MEM are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
  • Under is 22-8 in MEM last 30 home games.

NCAAB Prediction:  Connecticut +2

I am still sold that having a strong backcourt can make all the difference and that is clearly a difference between these two teams.

NCAAB Score prediction:  Connecticut 67 – Memphis 63

As a result the Huskies get the road win here and live a little longer.
