Coach Brad Stevens has his Bulldogs back in the Final Four and poised to avenge last year’s Championship loss to the Duke Blue Devil, but they must first eliminate the tournament’s biggest surprise, the VCU Rams who will be no push over in Saturday’s Regional Final match up at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.

If you’ve never followed March Madness before, now you’ve got a reason.

The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee sent shockwaves of unbelief through the college basketball world just two short weeks ago when they announced rewarding an at-large bid to the Virginia Commonwealth Rams after they finished the regular season fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association, and losing five of its last eight games.

VCU, however, has continued to stir up the frenzy surrounding its inclusion into the tournament, as it marches through the brackets toppling everyone one it its path including an impressive win over heavily favored Kansas in last weekend’s Elite 8 tilt in San Antonio.

The Rams are proving they are no lucky cupcake, playing with incredible heart and a zone press defense that continues to wear out opponents, forcing turnovers and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

And let’s not forget to mention the Rams uncanny ability to knock down points from long range. Coach Shaka Smart’s team ranks 17th nationally in three-point field goals per game (8.5) and has converted 65-146 (44.5 percent) shots from beyond the arc during its 2011 NCAA tournament run.

Forward Jamie Skeen leads the team in scoring and rebounding, and racked up 26 points, and ten huge rebounds against the Kansas bigs.

The senior has also been solid on the perimeter, shooting 38.7 percent from beyond the arc and compliments the Rams’ trio of three-point terror of Bradford Burgess, Brandon Rozzell, and Joey Rodriguez.

Meanwhile, after starting the regular season 14-9 with just six conference wins, no one expected Butler to return to the Final Four.  However, just one year after Butler’s surprising run to the championship game of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, the Bulldogs have now won 13 straight games overall entering Saturday’s matchup and appear poised to make another appearance in the Championship game on April 4.

With a solid core of hard working consistent players like Shelvin Mack, Ronald Nored, and Matt Howard, the Bulldogs are firing on all cylinders.

Howard, the team’s leading scorer has been a huge part of Butler advancing to its second consecutive Final Four. Mack and Nored have made huge contributions, combing to form one of the better defensive backcourts in the country.

Matt’s Free Prediction: The Rams can beat you inside or out with a feverish press and amazing speed. This could pose a problem for even an experienced Bulldogs squad who like to play a steadier pace.  I expect this to be a great game, probably one of the best of the tournament. While the Bulldogs are surging, how can I go against a Rams team that manhandled Kansas? I’m going with VCU.
