The last time these two teams met was in 2003. Duke came away with an easy 80-60 win. No current players participated in this one.
Butler continues to amaze. It wasn’t pretty but they found a way to win against Michigan State doing all the things they do best.
I can not recall a team that was as comfortable playing with a lead as the Bulldogs. Even though they were struggling offensively they continued to play strong defense and never let the Spartans take the lead. Gordon Hayward continues to lead and Matt Howard continues to frustrate.
If they met in the middle I think it would be better for the team overall. Perhaps using the word need is a bit strong but it would be great if he could stay out of foul trouble so they could keep him in the game.
It is hard to believe that in a championship game that it wouldn’t come back to haunt them. Butler is the underdog and the sentimental favourite and they are playing so close to home. This combination may be tough to beat…if they weren’t playing Duke.
Duke was very impressive in beating West Virginia. They played true to form getting the bulk of their scoring from Scheyer, Smith and Singler, each of whom had 19 or more points.
They also outrebounded the Mountaineers led by Brian Zoubek who can be quite the nuisance. It was a real shame to watch WVU star Da’Sean Butler go down to injury but the game had already been decided at that point.
Duke is the last #1 seed remaining and they are playing like it. Duke presents a slew of tough matchups for Butler.
The Bulldogs play great defense but I don’t see them being able to contain Duke’ scorers.
Butler will also have a tough time matching up with Duke’s size up front.
Michigan State plays tough but Duke shuttles in the Plumlee brothers solely to bang the boards.
Matt Howard is likely to get a neck cramp for having to look up so much. Duke is looking very strong heading into the final.

I have been wrong before but I don’t think I will be wrong again. Butler just can’t win can they? I hope for their sake they keep it close but as I was watching Duke tear up WVU I was thinking that it could be even worse on Monday night. Win or lose Butler has had a dream season.
They just don’t have enough scoring, length or experience to compete with this Duke team which will cut down the nets yet again whether you like them or not.
