Arizona State: 21-9 SU, 11-15 ATS

The Arizona State Sun Devils will look to close in on first place Cal with a win over PAC 10 foe the UCLA Bruins on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Arizona.

The Devils have won seven of nine, but need to win Saturday’s regular-season finale and make a charge in the Pac-10 tournament if they want a chance to reach the NCAA Tournament.

The Bruins held off ASU 72-70 the last time these two teams met back on Dec 31 at Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA has lost five of their last seven including a 79-74 loss to Arizona on Thursday. The Bruins led by 10 at the half but melted down as they allowed the Wildcats to shoot nearly 64 percent in the second half, compared to their miserable 33 percent. Scoring leader Michael Roll netted a career-high 21 points, while Serbian forward Nikola Dragovic and Malcolm Lee posted 19 and 13 points, respectively.

Tyler Honeycutt chipped in a double double of 11 points and 11 assists in the loss. The defeat at Arizona dropped the Bruins to three games under .500, hurting UCLA’s chances of gaining a berth in the NIT should it be excluded from the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins could be without 6-foot-8-freshman center Reeves Nelson, who recently underwent eye surgery.

He was cleared by a doctor Wednesday, but his status for Saturday is unknown.

Meanwhile ASU is coming off a 59-54 over Southern California on Thursday night. Junior guard Rihards Kuksiks broke his slump and lead the Devils with 24 points while Derek Glasser added 11 points in the win. Since scoring 28 points at Arizona, the Devils leading scorer Ty Abbott has fallen off the pace averaging just 12.1 points while going just 10 of 32 over his last three outings. ASU’s stout defense and 3-point shooting has them scoring 67.3 ppg while holding opponents to 58.5 ppg.

Mathematically ASU still has a chance to secure a piece of the Pac-10 regular-season title, but getting it would require Cal losing at Stanford.
