NCAA Men’s Basketball Conference Previews- The Big East

The 2010-2011 men’s college basketball season is underway and the power teams in the Big East are gearing up for not only another run at the conference title, but a national championship as well.

Syracuse has reloaded in an effort to defend last season’s title, but teams such as Villanova and Pittsburgh are loaded as well. Last year’s Big East Tournament champion West Virginia always remains a threat to make some noise and Georgetown continues to reestablish itself as one of the elite teams in the conference.

The following is a look at a few of the top teams in the Big East this season along with their current odds to win the conference as well as a national championship.

All odds are supplied by Sportsinteraction.com

Villanova
Big East +260
National Championship +1700

Scottie Reynolds is gone but Villanova still has players such as senior guard’s Cory Fisher and Corey Stokes along with senior forward Antonio Pena to lead the way. The Wildcats also have a solid core of young talent led by sophomore center Mouphtaou Yarou and sophomore guard Dominic Cheek that should keep them right near the top of the Big East once again this season. Pittsburgh
Big East +260
National Championship +2000

Much of the talent that led Pittsburgh to a 25-9 record last season is back and ready to pick up where they left off. Junior guard Aston Gibbs is poised for a monster year and freshman forward Talib Zanna could be the force the Panthers were looking for under the boards. This team is loaded from top to bottom and could be one of head coach Jamie Dixon’s best in years.

Syracuse
Big East +425
National Championship +1800

Syracuse lost three of its key players from last year’s team that went 30-5 and won the Big East. The pressure will be on senior forward Rick Jackson, junior guard Scoop Jardine, and sophomore guard Brandon Triche to pick up the slack for the Orange if they are going to have any chance to successfully defend their title. Freshman forward C.J. Fair will be a welcomed addition to Head Coach Jim Boeheim’s patented zone defense.

Georgetown
Big East +650
National Championship +3500

Georgetown returns two of its top scorers from last year’s team that went 23-11; senior guard’s Austin Freeman and Chris Wright. They will be joined by junior guard Jason Clark to form one of the more formidable back courts in the conference. Senior forward Julian Vaughn will be called on to the replace the dominating presence of Greg Monroe, who is now with Detroit in the NBA, but that will be easier said than done.

The Big East is always one of the most competitive conferences in men’s college basketball, but all the pieces are in place for Pitt to not only end up on top in the conference but to make a serious run at a national title come tournament time.

The Pick: Pittsburgh +260
