The No.6 Kansas Jayhawks, who fell from grace in their loss to Texas last Saturday, will host their in state rival, the Kansas State Wildcats in a much-anticipated Big 12 battle on Saturday at Phog Allen Fieldhouse.

As always, expectations for Kansas was high to start the season, and while they had strung together 19 wins, they had at times appeared to be lacking the intensity of what could be expected from a team that has been averaging 82.1 points per game while shooting a nation’s best 51.4 percent from the floor. The Jayhawks are also 29th in offensive rebounding with 39.2 per game and they are 4th in assists per game at 18.2.

KU’s leading scorer Marcus Morris is simply a force to be reckoned with, averaging 17 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He is aided by Markieff Morris who is averaging 12.7 points and 8.7 rebounds, and Tyrel Reed who is contributing 10 points per game.

Defensively Kansas is just as tough as they allow 62.5 points per game as the opposition shoots 38.5 percent from the floor and they are 52nd in the country in defensive rebounding.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats have endured and tough schedule that has resulted in a 2-4 start in conference play. It won’t be getting any easier as they take on a Jayhawks team that is 10-1 at home this season. The ‘Cats, who was No. 3 in October’s preseason top 25, have fallen out of the rankings and may be close to missing the NCAA Tournament altogether.

KSU did however pick up a needed win Monday, beating Baylor 69-61. Jacob Pullen is still the star for KSU averaging 17.9 points per game. The senior had 17 points against the Bears.

Beating Kansas State has been regular for the Jayhawks who has defeated the Wildcats by an average of 11.3 points during a six-game winning streak dating back to Jan. 2008, and has won 33 of the last 35 meetings.

The ‘Cats will need to figure out a way to either slow down Kansas’ high-octane offense, or keep up. Slowing them down may be the easier of the two as defensively Kansas State is allowing their opponents to score just 64.6 points per game and shoot 40.5 percent from the floor, and are 41st in the country in defensive rebounding.

Fans can prepare themselves for a high scoring affair with the Jayhawks coming away with the W here.
