Two teams with a chance only to upset the proverbial apple cart in the Pac-10 Tournament meet in the opening round in Los Angeles on Wednesday as the tenth seeded Arizona State Sun Devils look for a season-sweep of the seventh seeded Oregon Ducks. The winner of this game plays second seeded UCLA in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Sun Devils may have only won four games in conference play this season, but half of those came at the hands of the Ducks. On New Year’s Day in Eugene, the Sun Devils edged the Ducks by five points in the last home game ever played by Oregon at their old arena, McArthur Court. Then just six days ago in Tempe. The Sun Devils blasted the Ducks by twenty points.

Looking at those two games, the reason for victory in both is easy to point out. Arizona State shot better from the floor in both contests. In the first game, ASU outshot Oregon 44.9 percent to 32.1 percent. In the second game, it was more of the same as the Sun Devils shot 47.2 percent from the field and made 16 three pointers compared to Oregon’s 29.6 percent field goal percentage.

Oregon needs their leading scorer for the season, Joevan Catron, to step up his game against Arizona State. The senior forward average a team-high 15.3 points per game, but scored just 11 in the first loss at home dealing with foul trouble. In the second loss, Catron produced a paltry five points on 1-for-8 shooting.

Likewise, the Sun Devils feel good about the fact that they won both of those games despite heavy offensive contributions from their leading scorer, Trent Lockett. He didn’t play in the first game and only scored six points in the second matchup.

CBB Betting Trends:

ARZST are 8-1-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
Under is 12-2 in the last 14 meetings.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Arizona State – Sometimes in sports it’s about matchups not the records on paper. This is one of those matchups that has favored one team over another because that team has been willing to work harder.

The Sun Devils simply outworked the Ducks in the first two games head-to-head, and nothing from either team seems to indicate a change will occur this time.
