Michigan State Spartans vs. Wisconsin Badgers Preview

Many though Michigan State (13-9) had a legit shot for the National Championship this season, but they have slumped losing 4 of their last 5 Big 10 games. To get back on track they have to beat a 19th ranked Wisconsin (16-5) team that has only lost one home game all season and is 3rd in the Big 12 standings.

In their last games the Spartans lost to the Iowa Hawkeyes 72-52 on Wednesday night and the Badgers beat the Purdue Boilermakers 66-59 on Tuesday night.

In the first meeting between these Big 10 rivals on January 11th MSU was at home and beat Wisconsin 64-61 in OT.

Wisconsin has been a good betting team on the season going 11-6 ATS while MSU has been a terrible team to lay some green on going 6-15 ATS. In the last 7 games at home against the Spartans the Badgers have covered the spread 5 times.

Things are not good for MSU to say the least and after the Iowa loss head coach Tom Izzo stated, “That was the worst performance of a team that I’ve coached since I’ve been at Michigan State. As you can imagine, we are reeling.” The Spartans have to bounce back after a horrid performance at Iowa where they failed to shoot over 34% from the field and on D allowed the Hawkeyes to shoot 57.7% from the field.

MSU’s 2 leading scorers of Kalin Lucas (15.6 ppg) and Durrell Summers (13.7 ppg) shot a combined 7/23 in the loss to Iowa and this G duo will have to shoot the rock well tonight. That will not be easy, as the Badgers have one of the best defenses in the nation ranking 3rd in the country in opponents’ points allowed.

The Badgers will have to rely on their great defense, as they only rank 171st in the nation in scoring. MSU has struggled on D giving up 5 more ppg than their average in their last 3 games. Their only goal on D is to contain the duo of Jon Leuer (19.4 ppg) and Jordan Taylor (17.2 ppg), who are the only 2 Wisconsin players averaging in double figures. Both of these guys are shooting over 40% from beyond the 3-point line.

One way the Spartans can win is if they win the battle of the boards. They rank 59th in the nation in rebounds per game while the Badgers only rank 278th. Draymond Green (8.6 rpg) and Delvon Roe (5.7 rpg) must control the glass, especially if the Spartans continue to struggle with their shot.

Facing Wisconsin is far from what MSU and their struggling offense needs. The Badgers will play great D at home and keep Lucas and Summers from having good scoring games and that will be the difference. The Badgers will win this game and cover the spread sending the Spartans to under .500 in conference play.

Betting Trends
