The Boilermakers will take on Valparaiso looking to continue its domination of their cross state rival.

Purdue leads the all-time series 13-1, and thumped the Crusaders 86-62 in their last meeting in December 2009. The then fifth-ranked Boilermakers made 10 of 22 3-point attempts while the duo of JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore each scored 19 points. Moore tied a career high with five 3-pointers for the Boilermakers in that game.

This year has been a different story for Purdue who have been inconsistent offensively, but is still managing nearly 76 points per game, and are again led by Moore and Johnson, scoring 20.3 and 18.1 points per game respectively, being the only two players averaging in double figures.

Purdue are coming off a 66-47 win at Alabama on Saturday for its second straight victory, but it came with a price as swingman D.J. Byrd, who suffered a shoulder injury, will join Robbie Hummel and John Hart on the injury list, and is unlikely to start on Tuesday against the Crusaders.

The Boilermakers was held below 40 percent shooting for the third straight game, and with the additional loss of a key scorer, their ability to shut down their opponents on the defensive end will be even more critical moving forward, especially come conference time.

Defensively, the Boilermakers have been solid, limiting teams to 55.9 points and 38.3 percent shooting per game while forcing 18.3 turnovers, but they are sure to be tested by a balanced Valparaiso attack that boasts four players averaging double figures in points, led by Cory Johnson with nearly 15 points per game.

The Crusaders have won four straight including three straight away from home, defeating Loyola of Chicago 66-56 on Saturday, as Howard Little scored 16 points while dragging down seven boards, and Johnson added 14.

While the team has built its foundation on defense, holding its last four opponents to an average of 61.3 points and 38.0 percent shooting, they are yet to face the likes of Moore and Johnson.

Moore scored 23 points, nine rebounds, two steals, two blocks and hit five 3-pointers while Johnson had 17 points in their win over Bama. Something Valpro will need to be on guard against as the two are hot.

Purdue is going to have to find some supplementary offense somewhere, maybe from sophomore power forward Patrick Bade, freshman center Travis Carroll and redshirt freshman center Sandi Marcius. Meanwhile, the Crusaders will have the luxury of not having to face Hummel, a Valparaiso High graduate and former Crusaders ball boy. So while I’m still picking Valpro to lose, their chances of covering the spread may have just gotten better.
