The Orange was topped by Villanova 83-72, in front of 33,736 fans at the Carrier Dome on Saturday. It was the second-largest on-campus crowd in college basketball history.

Senior Rick Jackson grabbed his 800th career rebound in the second half and recorded his 13th career double-double with 16 points and 15 boards, but it wasn’t enough as Syracuse dropped its second game of the season and second in a row after losing to Pittsburgh 74-66 on Jan 17.

Syracuse won the battle in the paint, scoring 32 of its points around the rim, while holding Nova to just 16. The Wildcats made up the difference with its outside game, shooting 11-24 from three-point range.

Meanwhile, the Pirates dropped their fourth in a row, losing to Rutgers 66-60, at the Prudential Center on Saturday. Seton Hall was led by Herb Pope who scored 15 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds. Senior Jeremy Hazell also scored 15 points and Jeff Robinson had 12 points and eight boards.

Seton Hall had another tough shooting night, converting on just a 33.8 percent clip for the contest, while Rutgers shot 47.2 percent.

Syracuse leads the all-time series between the two teams 43-13 with the average score being 79-72 in favor of the Orange.

The Orange survived a terrible offensive performance for a 61-56 victory over Seton Hall just two weeks ago, as they had a tough time holding off a Pirates team that entered the game as the worst shooting team in the Big East at 40.4 percent.

As for Syracuse, it was worst performance to that point played all season, and if it wasn’t for sophomore guard Brandon Triche’s 15 second-half points, the Orange would have suffered their first defeat of the 2010-’11 season.

Seton Hall’s loss emphasized how much the Pirates need a star, as they attempted 67 shots and made only 31 percent of them, not to mention that somehow they trailed 20-19 at halftime but chucked up 17 3-pointers and made none of them.

Despite the struggle, a win is a win as Syracuse squeaked out another close game.

Things have gotten sloppy for the Orange as of late, and they will look to get back on the rails, taking advantage of an underpowered Pirates squad.
