Giant killers St. John’s will welcome No. 4 Pittsburgh for a Saturday Big East matinee at Madison Square Garden, a place where they have beaten Duke, Notre Dame, Georgetown and Connecticut.

The Panthers won’t care, though, as they too feel quite at home at the Garden with seven Big East championship game appearances and two titles there over the last decade. Pitt also knocked off Maryland and Texas in the Garden in mid-November, so their confidence has to be soaring.

Senior point guard Brad Wanamaker has kept Pitt’s offense running full steam while leading scorer Ashton Gibbs sat out three games with a knee injury. Gibbs has been cleared to play Saturday. Wannamaker has scored 11, 21 and 13 points in Gibbs’ absence and made 12 of 13 free throws. He also had five assists against South Florida, as the Panthers rode a 20-5 run in the second half to secure a 67-55 home win while increasing their conference lead to two games over Notre Dame. Getting Gibbs back just adds to Pitt’s firepower.

As for St. John’s, they have continued to defy the odds, and have put together an impressive resume that should get them a ticket to this year’s NCAA Tournament If so it would be their first appearance in nine years.

They are currently winners of five of their last six including an inspiring 80-68 win at Marquette on Tuesday. Leading scorer Dwight Hardy led the way with 28 points, responding from a six-game January slump (9.8 points per game) to average 25.3 over his next six, capped by his effort against Marquette. Hardy hit 12 of 15 free throws in the win.

The Red Storm made 13 steals and erased a seven-point, second-half deficit getting a big lift from reserve Justin Burrell, who scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds off the bench.

St. John’s is 28-18 in the series since the Panthers joined the Big East, but hasn’t won since 2006. Pitt has taken five straight by an average of 18 points.

CBB Betting Trends:

PITT are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
PITT are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 vs. Big East.
Over is 45-21-1 in PITT last 67 Sat. games.
Home team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

Matt’s Free Pick: Pitt – If St. John’s can knock off yet another highly ranked team in Pitt, coach Steve Lavin could be in line for national coach of the year. But with the Panthers back at full strength, I think they will have to wait until Wednesday’s match up with lowly DePaul to add Lavin to the ballot.
