Four Huskies scored in double figures as eighth-ranked UConn completed its non-conference schedule 12-0, with a 72-61 win over Tennessee before a sellout crowd of 16,294 in Hartford.

Kemba Walker, who entered the contest as the nation’s second-leading scorer, struggled from the field making just six-of 17 shots, but he dished out a game-best seven assists. For the first time this season, Walker was not Connecticut’s sole leading scorer.

The Huskies received big boosts off the bench from both Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and Charles Okwandu. Coombs-McDaniel made two three-pointers 29 seconds apart while Okwandu was a presence in the lane all afternoon long. He finished with six points and five rebounds.

The Huskies, winners of five straight, will now face Marquette, a team that is 2-3 in its last five outings including an 80-75 defeat to No.16 Notre Dame on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles looked like they may pull off their second upset over the Irish, this time in South Bend, as the led by 12 midway through the second half. But the defense fell apart and so did their chance to string two wins in a row, something they haven’t done in nearly a month.

After a strong first half, Marquette went cold in the second, shooting only 9-for-30.

Scoring leader Darius Johnson-Odom scored 25 points and Jae Crowder 15 to pace the Golden Eagles in the disappointing loss.

UConn leads 3-2 in all games between the two team since 1980, with the average score being 79-78 in favor of the Huskies.

The Huskies seem to be back, and with the fiercely competitive Jim Calhoun at the helm, the program looks destined to return to national prominence coming off a disappointing 2009-10 season while taking heat for its NCAA violations.

Calhoun may have the best recruiting class in 10 years, young but improving by the week and producing big wins on game day. They’re 16-2 overall record speaks for itself and they are well on their way to an NCAA bid for sure.

However, don’t count out Marquette, a team that is shooting the ball at a 54 percent clip. They have proven that they can play with the best as seen in their 79-57 upset of then-No. 9 Notre Dame on Jan. 10, as the Golden Eagles soared to new heights, making 12 of its 17 three-point attempts.

This should be closer than most will predict with the Huskies eking out a close win on the road.
